Just saying hi from Marylebone as I'm here as well, omw home to Paris!

I would also add that I am certain there are EIHG and EHG cohorts in GenX and (I'm sure I will get pushback here) Boomers. Not just a m/z-ennial thing.

Oh DEFINITELY!!!!! Our grandmothers/moms/aunts/their bffs (gen x / boomers/ etc) are the blueprint !!!!!!! I will always kiss the generational ring <3

And HIIIII if you happen to be an Hermes girl, the store on new bond st is the nicest of all time <3

HIIIII I am definitely an Hermès girl haha. Living in Paris half the year makes it hard to shop anywhere else. I love the Sèvres store ❤️

Ohhhh YES!! I forget that paris stores are so delightful that the need to go feral in other cities must rapidly diminish😭😭 you are lucky in all the best ways🥹 xx

that "how many languages were you bullied in whilst growing up?" question just knocked me on my ass for some reason! I'm actually looking at my history like "oh... my parents are immigrants and I've traveled all over Africa and my elders jump from Igbo to Yoruba to French and back to English with ease" and now my brain is firing. There's definitely so much to unpack when it comes to being a first gen African growing up in the States and feeling like you couldn't be "chic" the way your European counterparts were even though all of my African aunties are the very definition of EIHGs. My mom just got back from an impromptu trip to South Korea!

Expand full comment

your thread on who gets to be chic is SO IMPORTANT TO ME. the entire reason why I started posting on social media two years ago was because I am truly surrounded by the most special and perfect women who are not at all reflected by traditional/mainstream media. I'm so glad that EIHG is a (conceptual) space that makes you and your lived experiences feel seen, and your mom is MY QUEEN. My EIHG bestie's mom also just returned from an impromptu trip to Korea!! Pls update on whether or not she picked up some skincare!!! Xx

Literally SAME!!! My mom seamlessly switching from Igbo to English to parables to insult me.. in hindsight is a top tier thing!!

Most accurate thing I’ve ever read, will add she could be any age, she’s reading Mahfouz as naturally as Morrison, if she’s very wealthy she never lets

You feel it uncomfortably but rather is the most gracious and easy of hostesses, welcoming you into her space (actual and intellectual) as a peer

Yes I came from the provinces and took notes

oOo an EHG/EIHG reading list?

Expand full comment

Yes!!

Expand full comment

This is the perfect comment. YES TO ALL!!! I’m obviously deeply zillennial so that’s the most comfortable vantage point for me to speak to but AGREE that EIHG/EHGs are timeless and can be any age!!!!! Should have made that clear in the above 😭 thank you for building on this in the best way 💖💖💖💖💖

Love it so much…my shortlist of elder ones

-my landlady let’s just say signing the lease was a cultural and artistic experience to have the honor to take coffee in her home, coffee she travels to a specific country to buy

-Esther Perel, very different type

-Audrey Hepburn - NOT as a memable Pinterest icon but as a refugee woman who survived the war by the skin of her teeth and hustled her way to the top (contrast to Grace Kelly, well traveled American)

-various UN officials especially if they are second gen TCKs

The Serena Vanderwoodsen is monocultural thesis is very astute. Her wealth and privileges are obviously American Her international counterpart would have attended UNIS, and her parents are diplomats and or run conglomerates nobody has heard of

I’ll calm down now sorry I didn’t realize you’d awakened so many thoughtsss

obsessed with your list of additions!!!! you truly get me. living for all of this

good to be SIMPATICO <3

I’m going to propose to add to this the EHM or EIHM…(M for mom!) We are former EHGs and EIHGs who now have to reconcile that life with rugrats nipping at our ankles.. we out here tryin’!!!

oh I love!!!!! I feel bad because to me the girl is encapsulating all ranges of those identifying as women, but realizing that it may read YOUNGER. If it adds any clarity, elusive hot moms are some of my main muses. and elusive hot GRANDMOTHERS make my world spin.

My best friend in high school grew up to become an EIHG (dropped out of college for a career in theatre acting/modelling, went back years later for film school, now - a decade later - she has a debut novel coming out this month and I couldn't be prouder). Like she is totally the kind of woman who is always on the move for work (works at a tv network/content studio), would + could move somewhere for a year 'just because' if she really wanted, and has the charm to seamlessly slot into the culture even in places where the people look nothing like her. Basically whatever semblance of charm I have, I learned to cultivate it by being around her when we were young and I owe her a lifelong debt of gratitude for that!

Expand full comment

omg you AND your high school bff sound so fabulous -- that's iconic??? "whatever semblance of charm I have, I learned to cultivate it by being around her when we were young..." is SO POWERFUL. Better than any love letter I've written or received. The EIHG aura is FOREVER xx

haha the EIHG is her, not me (I'm firmly a deskbound 9-7 wage slave who scrimps and saves for her international trips and stays in hostels sometimes i.e. very definite Tourist Energy, just....polite tourist) but the aura is so strong it rubs off! (edit: or so I would like to think).

Would love to hear about Elusive Hot Boys and how they differ! I can see the obvious overlap, but what might be gender-unique?

I like have thought so much about this as a concept, but am surrounded by so few men (LOL) that I don't know if I could do it justice??? Some of my guy friends and cousins might fit the bill, but unclear how representative that is??? Do we trust this, if you want me to try..... I'LL DO IT xx
