STEALTH STATUS: What Ur Diamonds Say About U
less of a gift guide and more of a framework…. HAPPY HOLIDAYS x
Today’s EIHG anthropology is sponsored by A Diamond is Forever. If you’d like to work with trademarked in 2026, reach out to kalinak@brigadetalent.com.
Consider this to be the cheeky, holiday szn continuation of our viral “what ur manicure says about u” universe. For those unfamiliar, the TLDR = we unpacked manicures through a Veblen-lens, mapping a hierarchy that made legible the (very important!) status semiotics of bare nails vs gel manis. And just like the quiet luxury milk universe before it (whole milk! forever!), I am back with another BIG observation related to a critical shift in status x consumption.
This actually all started about a year ago, when I was in Palm Beach and hanging out with my mom’s very comfortable (wink wink) best friend. She was talking about the state of natural diamonds x high jewelry (as one does), and said, aghast, who even wants a bright white stone anymore???? I certainly don’t.
She continued to say that of all of the pieces passed down to her, she could care less about the blinding stones (perfect clarity + color), instead, she loved the stuff with character — big and old stones that told a story — salt and pepper, warm tones, etc. She is also… to put it simply… an EIHG muse to the fckn wazooo— she grew up everywhere, has the best taste on everything (articulated in a very SHARP tone lol), and doesn’t give a FCK about what u think.
So naturally, after having this convo, my mind started reeling. We know that EIHGs are a bellwether for trends, and I knew that what I’d just heard was a sign. I sat on it (read: forgot about it), until I opened instagram a few months later and saw that my friend Sarah Spellings (an EIHG) had written a blockbuster piece on brown diamonds x status for WSJ. (As someone who has ALWAYS preferred brown and has always been met with confusion at best, concern at worst, this felt like a major victory.)
THEN, months later, I observed that Taylor Swift’s engagement ring wasn’t bright white… it was a big and old stone with color and character. I immediately thought, OHHH? And THEN, this past week, I read a piece in Vogue Business on the emergent consumer demand for Desert diamonds (natural stones in warm whites, browns, champagnes, yellows, and oranges) and I thought OH OH OH. It’s… happening…
There are two things you should know, before we proceed:
Firstly, if I were to analyze this through world systems theory (my North Star), once any hegemony grows too big (thus is too accessible), it destabilizes under its own weight, and status migrates to the next frontier. (This is the academic’s way of analyzing a trend cycle.)
Secondly, I went to Namibia last week on a press trip with A Diamond is Forever, and it changed my life. I flew by helicopter onto ATLANTIC 1 — a massive marine vessel where experts use ONLY technology to recover diamonds from the ocean. There is no drilling or digging, just a high tech vacuum w/ sensors to spot the diamonds. 99% of what gets sucked up goes right back down within a minute.
I then went to Windhoek (Namibia’s capital city) where I got to PLAY with the rough/uncut stones that I’d seen getting recovered from the middle of the ocean (many in desert hues). By day 3 of the trip, it became VERY clear that the ethical management of natural diamonds in Namibia supports most of the country — people take their jobs seriously and are passionate about knowing everything there is to know about these stones. It’s a form of pride, heritage, and (as a consumer) value differentiation. When you’re buying a Namibian natural diamond, you’re also investing in Namibia’s schools, infrastructure, sustainability efforts, and creating economic health and freedom ACROSS the country (dare I say… the utopian trickle down economics that we were PROMISED in the 80s lolol).
It’s a wonder and a feat to behold— and what an honor to get to consume something so beautiful and so directly beneficial to others? During the trip, I noticed that, for me, diamonds also became about connection and hope… to which I said COUNT ME IN….. as if the child (me) who kicked and screamed to visit the crown jewels every year would need more incentive to be obsessed with natural diamonds, HA!
Anyway, it felt necessary to include these two asides before we dig into the FUN. We’re a little Wallerstein and a little Veblen today; LFG.
COVERT/OVERT STATUS — THE EIHG NATURAL DIAMOND HIERARCHY
The same girl who drinks whole milk and has bare nails wants a Desert diamond. simple. If you don’t believe me, believe my dear friend kindred lubeck (who.. yes.. is the genius who designed taylor swift’s engagement ring)…. she has ALSO off record noted to me that her clients (who *I* perceive as very hot and very cool and very very successful women) are bullish on warmer hued stones. The general consensus that I’ve picked up from EIHGs in my life = Desert diamonds are just more texturally interesting; we also see this mirrored across what’s trending ATM, boho minimalism/literary cowgirl/ etc etc etc… consumers are bored of being sold perfection.
As such, Desert diamonds tell a visual AND emotional story, which is also a through line for the curious minds — if you’re investing in something that’s existed for billions of years…. wouldn’t you want the look of the stone to reflect that? If your diamonds just look like what everyone else thinks it must look like, then is it really, well, that special?
Also VERY exciting that this is no longer conceptual… many an EIHG approved jewelry designer have started rolling out Desert diamonds in their collections — of the more niche, just ask Bernard James, Vanessa Fernandez, Maggi Simpkins, Milamore, Retrouvai, WWAKE, Marvin Douglas, TENTHOUSANDTHINGS, Vale, and Vice Versa…..
You might be asking, what about the pinks and purples and other vibrant, rainbow hued natural diamonds??? Well, they deserve a spot, obviously, but i’m putting them second to Desert diamonds because I’ve observed that EIHGs tend to opt for spinels (a niche and cool girl gem) when they want to Go There > a diamond. That’s not to say they’re not fabulous, because I recently saw a lavender natural diamond that sent me into the abyss, but not the immediate frontrunner that’s going to overtake number one.
And of course, in last place, we have the bright white natural stones. In my book— Cut, Color, Clarity is being replaced by Cut, Color, Clarity, and CHARACTER. The last C is the control variable that mutates your relationship to the other 3 Cs. Character could mean you want a cloudy or speckled stone, it could mean you want something warm, eclectically hued, or dark, it could also mean that you want to use a rough natural diamond instead of something perfectly bright and sparkly….
Now…. I must note – this isn’t an attack on your bright whites!! If you have one, congrats (and if you want to relieve yourself of it, i’d be happy to take it off your hands LOL). This framework is moreso an introduction to a new lens that is taking shape. So if you’re naturally drawn to the bright whites, continue. However, if you’re not, but maybe felt bound to the laws of status x culture noting it’s the only way to go, let this be the thing that unchains you from that logic. The only thing that matters now is YOU. What do YOU like, what do YOU want to consume, and what makes YOU happy. The status comes from the wearer not the object, and I think it’s time we all sit with that for a while longer.
I LOVE YOU <3 thank you A Diamond is Forever for not only taking me to Namibia on a trip of a lifetime, but for ALSO for letting me bring this piece to life <3. And thank YOU for reading!!!! I am so so so curious to hear your thoughts on all, how do you feel about Desert diamonds? How do you feel about Character as the fourth C? LET’S CHAT —
TTYS (if my parents are reading this…. YES i’ll take an ombre brown natural diamond bezel set tennis bracelet 4 xmas, sooooo sweet of you to ask);
TM x

Is this in response to the lab grown diamond trend which makes getting a bright white perfect 4c “diamond” too common? Seems like a natural pivot for EIHGs to go looking for “imperfections” that subtly mark their diamonds as organic and real (read: rare).
A) The only thing that matters is what YOU like / want / etc and "The status comes from the wearer not the object" A LITTLE LOUDER FOR THE PPL IN THE BACK PLZ. I think that what we're really unpacking here via the EHIG uni ie manis / diamonds / et al is that the truest status indicator is CHOICE. Which now that I think about it, directly relates to CHARACTER in this context in that opting for something with character was a very specific choice bc we're all served the status quo everywhere all the time so that is easier than digging for what truly resonates. And I've been thinking about this specifically against making a STATEMENT in that a CHOICE is a personal indulgence in something that delights you and FCK everyone else and a STATEMENT is an external display for others which, to be clear, I don't think is inherently wrong. Sometimes you want to go your own way, sometimes you want to belong. Everyone has their own prerogative. But in light of the idea that accessibility leads to hegemonic collapse and status migration... Choosing things with character that delight YOU with no regard for what everyone else is doing seems the platonic ideal of trend-proof EIHG-coding, no?
And now that I've talked myself in a huge circle, B) next time you're in PB can we plz hang out?!
Brilliant (see what I did there) per usual. xx
